Matinee Infamy

on Saturday there was the matinee
double featured dark and humid
cartoons cowboys and alien creatures
from outer space with heads like
large green light-bulbs that emitted ESP rays
which explained why their lips didn’t move

in the lobby two large mirrors faced each other
from opposite walls and I was convinced
that if you were exactly the right height
you would be able to see infinite iterations
of yourself and I wondered if infinity
was the same as eternity and if
you got into some magical exact position
all the motion in the universe would be frozen
forever and ever and I worried about it
but great scientist that I was
I was willing to chance it
in the name of science standing on tip-toes

but you and the universe were saved
one bright July Saturday afternoon
because one of the mirrors was replaced
with glossy black and white photo icons
of Brando Monroe Clift and Curtis

some unknown theater manager
unsung hero of mankind
had realized the danger
and in the spirit of Flash Gordon
took steps to save us all
and me from my infamy
