The World Was Flat

through the twin lenses
of an old Yashica reflex camera
loaded with Tri-X film
I removed from the world
the blues of the sky
the pinks from young faces
the greens from windrows of dancing trees
and amber splashes of sunlight

it was as if the color had been
leached from the universe
and all that was left
was the weightlessness of light
and the burden of darkness
pressing itself down on us
flattening us into two dimensions
on high-contrast paper

the black and white world was flat
sharp-edged simple
not so long ago
