Keys

lost in the garage
(who knows how long ago)
is a cigar box full of
the other halves of things
that have never found their mates

and a mysterious ring of keys
to things once owned
and perhaps owned still
(nobody will ever know)

there are large keys
to unknown doors
who’s locks were changed
(I don’t remember why)

there are small keys
to luggage or padlocks
(some of which may live in the attic
or basement)

there is one oddly shaped key
that may be to an old briefcase
(or perhaps a garden tractor)

the keys are sacred things
(never to be thrown away) because
they may open corners of lives
long ago lost and forgotten
