their eye contact lasted only a moment
less than the life-time of a meteor
just an accident of proximity
or perhaps it was only imagined
she had the brown-eyed look of a river
that he wouldn’t have minded drowning in
he flashed a look of pure obscurity
a chaos of primitive potentials
his wish was that he had not so quickly
looked away from that face that seemed stranded
on a sandbar somewhere between pretty
and beautiful perfectly imperfect
at last he turned to the crimson-tiled counter
and in defeat ordered his latte` to go
