Death In The Library

I was killed in a library
like any good mystery
it happened on a dark
and stormy night
in a world ruled
by rain and wind

the white headed librarian
distracted by lightning
set me loose in an adult section
ruled by the dewey decimal system

I took to judging books
by their size
on the assumption
the smartest ones
would be the thickest

I pulled one by one
a hundred books
down from the wooden shelves
and breathed in the fragrance of
their tables of contents

the ones with forwards
annotations indexes
gazetteers and glossaries
were the ones if favored

finally the weight
of the knowledge in the world
stopped my breathing and
crushed me
